Turns out, writing is cool again. Those who would have laughed at touching a typewriter ten years ago, are now are busy tap, tap, tapping away; rushing to get their next story/post out.
But…
Is anyone reading it?
With the Web, people don’t kick back, grab a coffee/beer and spend hours reclining on the couch, as they might with a book, newspaper, or magazine. They sit at their computer (ok, sometimes on the couch) and skim—this is the critical word.
In an information rich, time poor world, people don’t read, they scan.
When something jumps up and grabs their attention, they click. If it doesn’t, they move on. You have about three seconds to win them over.
Interesting note: Scan is a verb, meaning both to scrutinize, and, to glance over.
